The sturdier the camera tripod the better. I have one I have used and
tipped over several times in the garage and on the road. I have a
sturdier one that doesn't have a tilt top, but I made my own from a
couple unistrut corner brackets and a 1/2" clamp bolt with a couple
Bellvelle (coned) spring washers so the wrench pressure is easily
adjusted. Picture is at:
http://www.geraldj.networkiowa.com/PIX/TripodTiltHead.JPG. I use a
shortened category two lift pin for my azimuth post and welded an
adapter sleeve that fits that pin to a plate that is bolted to my rig.
Details of that are at:
http://www.geraldj.networkiowa.com/PIX/DishMount.JPG I used a shaft
collar that fit around the adapter sleeve and made a clamp bolt with a
brass tip to stop spinning in the wind. The big knob is handier than a
wrench for tightening.
Sometimes ISU surplus has sturdy tripods, but didn't list any this week
and they closed about a half hour ago and I haven't been there if a
couple weeks. Standing in the rain to get in as early as possible would
not have been fun today either. I plan to visit all three Axman stores
Friday, I'll be on the lookout for a sturdy tripod, I can always use an
extra if I overbuy.
