Hello, NLRS!
How much FM activity will there be in the sprint?
The reason I'm asking is that I want to do an unusual rover operation, and
this would be a good opportunity.
I want to do an activation for National Parks On The Air (NPOTA) using only my
$30 Baofeng handheld. Until this event, I was unaware that we had a "National
Park" in the Twin Cities, but the Mississippi National River and Recreation
Area is a unit of the National Park Service, and for purposes of NPOTA, any
operation within 100 feet of the water counts as operation from a National
Park.
There seem to be quite a few hams who own nothing other than a cheap handheld.
And if I owned nothing but a cheap handheld (or even an expensive handheld),
I would quickly lose interest in ham radio. So to promote some interest, I
like to show that it's possible to do more interesting things than just talk
through repeaters. And hopefully, that will encourage interest in other
activities.
In order for my activation to qualify, I will need to make at least 10 simplex
QSO's. So hopefully, I can make a total of 10 QSO's from EN34 and EN35. The
chances of that happening at random are pretty slim. But if a few big guns
are on the air, it shouldn't be difficult.
So before I head out, I want to know if there's any interest. I'm not sure
exactly what my schedule looks like Monday night (or even if I can do it at
all). But I could probably be near the Lowry Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis
(EN35) at about 7:15, and then at a location in St. Paul (probably near Summit
Avenue) at about 8:30.
To make it easier to get my required 10 QSO's, I would also appreciate another
QSO on 440 after we connect on 2. If I work 3 stations on 2 bands at each
grid square, that would give me my 10 QSO's. QSO's with 10 different stations
would be even more impressive.
If anyone thinks they might be able to listen for me, please send me a direct
e-mail to clem.law at usa.net. If it looks like I have enough interest, I'll
reply with a more accurate schedule. (I get the digest version of the mailing
list, so please add my address to the reply so that I'll get it right away.)
I'll plan on using 146.55, and then QSY to 446.0 if we make contact. In
addition to giving the grid square for the sprint, I'll give a signal report
and "RV04" for the park identifier. In addition to your grid for the sprint,
I will need a signal report and state (although if I miss it, I'll probably be
able to figure out what state you're in.)

Rick W0IS
