[NLRS] Beacons this morning

Haven't checked beacons but can't copy the Fort Dodge (50 miles) or the
Iowa Falls (30 miles) NWS stations for the stronger signals from more
distant stations like Omaha about 200 miles. This is on my Bearcat
scanner with indoor antenna.

I think we have a combination of factors. We had (as did Minnesota) lots
of rain on and off yesterday. Some places got 6 to 10 inches. We have
remnants of fronts which can have warm air running over cold air, and
the wind is calm today. We had dense fog in some areas. The high
humidity near the ground is giving us lake effect ducting. The possibly
overrunning fronts gives us lines of temperature inversion. The lack of
wind keeps those inversions and that from normal overnight radiant
surface cooling from being mixed and destroyed. A high pressure dome
also does all of the above. Best DX I worked under a dome was Houston on
1296 with 3 watts.

Last summer one July morning I was out early going to the Cedar Falls
swap meet with considerable fog. I had an extended conversation with a
ham (now a priest) in the St. Cloud area using the St. Cloud repeater.
He was originally from west central Iowa and we had played in the Fort
Dodge Symphony together during his high school days. After he had to
leave to catch a plane I continued with a trucker on I94 in that area on
2m FM.
