Excellent! I hope you have fun!
I think the key is to turn your VFO and your antenna a bunch. There are
fixed and rover stations out there that you won't know about. The secret
to finding them is tune from 144.160 to 144.250 and from 50.100 to
50.200. Duane N9DG in EN53 is the best "tuner and turner" out there.
He's found me in the rover everywhere I've gone.
The other key is to visit the spreadsheet at:
http://tinyurl.com/vhfss2015
In order to be aware of KNOWN activity. You want to work all who are
listed there. And the key will be who you can find beyond those who
listed themselves. (Note there is a tab for fixed stations and a tab
for Rovers.)
I'll go check QRZ to see what Grid you are in...... I see you are in
EN34.
Sure, call CQ some....but tune and turn a BUNCH!!!
I spose one other secret to pushing distance is to give CW a try. Please
know that VHF'ers don't mind slow code at all. We'd rather make the Q
and log your grid than impress you with how fast we can send. Most ops
will try to match the rate you send at. If you are slow, I know we'll
come back slow. And QRS is a friendly reminder :-) . But we can make
out a callsign miles further away on CW rather than voice.
A third tip is to "tail end" on other guys near you. Friendly ops will
help get distant stations attention for you.
When it comes to turning your antenna, SW through to North might seem
like unfertile ground. But IF you bag a Q out that way, it is a CHOICE
grid. And we know there are staions out there in EN13, EN17, EN07,
EN26, etc.
We hope to work you a bunch on Saturday and would love to work you on
Sunday from 120 miles further south.
Welcome aboard VHF. I think we have a healthy and friendly VHF
community here in the Upper Midwest.

Subject: [NLRS] Newbie Tips
I'm planning my first stab at a VHF contest this weekend. Any tips for a
little pistol (okay maybe squirt gun is more like it)? I'd just like to
give a few points away and have some fun. I've got an Icom IF-7000 so
100W on 6m, 50W on 2m and 35W on 70cm. I've got a G5RV on 6m up about
30ft horizontally polarized and a J-pole up about 25ft vertically
polarized for 2m and 70cm.
Your help is appreciated.
