This week Menard's has a special on a kit of 160 135 degree split point
titanium coated drill bits. Sizes from 3/64 to 1/2" in mostly 1/64 steps
up to 9/32 skipping 7/64 plus 5/16, 23/64, 3/8 and 1/2. They must expect
the small bits to be fragile, the set has 26 each of the three smallest
sizes and only one each of the three largest. Store price $24.99, $15
mail in rebate. I think I paid more for a 21/32 split point bit 8 or 9
years ago from McMaster-Carr. It is unusual to find the small bits in
split point. I haven't tried any of them yet but the price after rebate
is super.
The beauty of 135 degree split point bits is that they don't run away
from the first contact point because they cut to the center and you can
drill large holes without a pilot bit. And now I see an asterisk
pointing to fine print on the package, only 1/8" and larger have the 135
degree split point, the smaller ones have the conventional 118 degree
point that needs a good center punch mark to not run.
