I'll throw in a few more pennies...
One of the suggestions I've seen in several forums is that if you want
your old Win XP programs to run under Win 7, you should NOT let them
be installed in the Program_Files directory. Most Win XP software will
default to installing in Program_Files, but on Win 7, that directory
is owned by the operating system. The result is that when you try to
run the program, you don't have permission to update or modify the
config and data files in the Program_Files directory.
But if you change the installation directory to somewhere else on the
hard drive, usually in a directory that you create yourself, then your
user account owns the directory and the files. Therefore when you run
the program it can change the config files or add-remove data without
getting errors.
I've read various suggestions to stay away from the 64-bit OS versions, too...
You can also have trouble if the old Win XP program tries to install
system or DLL files. Win 7 will not let you install them in the System
directory the way Win XP would. If you have special .SYS or DLL files,
you should try putting them in the main program directory along with
the .EXE files.
It really comes down to doing a Google search if you have trouble
installing a program and hope that somebody else already solved it for
you....
