My XYL will be away this weekend, and the kids will be "helping" me with a
minimal rover expedition using an FM handheld only.
I'll try to put out a call from a few high points in the Twin Cities on 146.55
and 446.0 with my brand new Baofeng handheld. I don't have one of the
"reverse" SMA connectors, so unless I make it to Radio City Saturday morning,
I'll have the rubber duck only. Either way, I'll probably only have a quarter
wave vertical on the car. So please listen for the weak ones on FM!
If I can find it, I'll also bring along my 220 handheld and be on 223.5.
I ordered the $30 Baofeng to see what it's like, and there do seem to be a lot
of them in circulation. It appears that new hams get them, use them on
repeaters for a while, and then quickly lose interest. So on my blog, I want
to show that there are some interesting things that can be done with them, and
a VHF contest seems like a good use. With that purpose in mind, if you work
me once, feel free to give me a signal report if you hear me from a different
location, especially if it's from a greater distance. If you're interested in
what's in my blog so far, here's the link:

Please listen for the weak ones on FM, and I hope to work a few of you this
weekend. And hopefully, I can encourage a few newbies to try out VHF
contesting.

Rick W0IS
