Hello NLRS land
Happy New Year to all. I hope you had lots of VHF+ fun in 2013 with more to come in 2014 !
By now you have probable heard about the ARRL's year long Centennial QSO Party. Full information on this year long operating event can be found on the Leagues website at http://www.arrl.org/centennial-qso-party .
As a part of this year long event the Northern Lights Radio Society and Minnesota Wireless Association (MWA) will be hosting the W1AW/0 call sign for two weeks in 2014. During these two weeks we would like to see the W1AW/0 call sign used on as many VHF bands, using as many VHF modes (terrestrial, satellite, EME), by as many Minnesota operators, as we can. The first week coincides with the Minnesota QSO Party while the second week coincides with the June VHF contest. Specifically, the two weeks are Wednesday, January 29, 0000 UTC to Tuesday, February 4, 2359 UTC and again Wednesday, June 11, 0000 UTC to Tuesday, June 17, 2359 UTC. You can find more information on the MWA website at http://w0aa.org/index.php/component/content/article/20-uncategorised/65-arrl-centenial-qso-party .
Coordination of the use of W1AW/0 on HF is being handled by Bill, AC0W. If you are interested in using W1AW/0 on HF please contact Bill per the information provided on the MWA website via the link above.
Coordination of the use of W1AW/0 on VHF+ is being handled by me. If you are interested in using W1AW/0 on VHF+ please contact me.
A spreadsheet that will be used for scheduling of W1AW/0 for both HF and VHF+ can be found at https://skydrive.live.com/view.aspx?cid=F51A95C8767F82F1&resid=F51A95C8767F82F121304&app=Excel&wdo=1 . You can find the same link on the MWA website link listed above. I have also added the link to our NLRS website.
Note that on VHF+ we have divided the "mode" into terrestrial, satellite, and EME. This means that W1AW/0 can be running on EME at the same time that someone else may be using the call sign on satellite or terrestrial.
Also note that I have pulled out the time segment that represents the June VHF contest. My goal is to find a multi-op station, or a well equipped single-op station, that plans to run the June VHF contest hard, to use the W1AW/0 call sign. If we have multiple interests then we may look to sub-divide the use of W1AW/0 during the contest time period, this is TBD.
In summary.
1. This is a great opportunity to use W1AW/0 yourself. If you are interested, read the information per the links above and then drop me an email direct. Yes, you have to be in Minnesota.
2. Note that you can sign up for any given day on terrestrial, satellite, or EME, or all three if you want. I am hoping that we can find some EME and satellite users to take advantage of this fun event. You can also sign up for more than one time slot, etc. How fun it would be to provide W1AW/0 on EME.
3. This would be a great opportunity to organize a multi-op for the June contest to use W1AW/0, maybe from home, maybe from a superior VHF location, maybe from a rare grid. If you have some ideas, if you have some interests, drop me a note. Note that it may be possible for us to subdivide the use of W1AW/0 during the VHF contest but in doing so any contacts made under the W1AW/0 call sign do not count towards your non-W1AW/0 call sign score; they are two different logs.
Drop me a note if your are interested in using W1AW/0. I hope we generate some interest on EME, satellites, terrestrial modes as well as on multiple VHF+ bands.
73, Jon
W0ZQ
