Myself, I would never ever climb a crank-up tower, even if its pinned. Never ever. Get a bucket truck or tip it over.

If you must climb a tower in the extended position, e.g., a jammed pulley,
would imagine that placing 2x4s in multiple places through the lattices
f the tower sections, especially under the bottoms of the interior
ections, would be a place to start. What else could be done that would be
onsidered "good practice"?
