One possibility is that someone accidentally attached a PL-259 instead of 
an N Male to that N female socket. The outer threads are the same size, so 
the connector seems to screw into place normally, but the center conductor 
of a PL-259 is much larger than the center conductor of an N Male, so it 
splays out the center conductor of the N female socket.

Glad you solved the mystery (at least part of it) and are back on the air 
at full working capability.
