I have been messing with a RTL-SDR dongle. Originaly used as a TV tuner and
with the application of some software it has become a very popular SDR
receiver.

For a little gadget that cost less than $19 it is a real hoot. You can use
SDR# (SDR Sharp) or HDSDR control software (free) and you have a SDR
receiver that covers 24 to about 1700 MHZ or use a up converter and you can
use it on HF.
It will take more than a old laptop running XP 32 bit to make it work.
Takes a bit of snuff.

My interest in it is not Ham related at this point. My interest is for a PC
based system for monitoring the health of paging transmitters. Although I
can see I will be playing with it on the Ham bands as soon as I have time.

For those who like to play around there are all sorts of applications out
there to decode POCSAG and ADS-B aircraft position data and display a RADAR
type map. For you guys who want to explore aircraft scatter. :>)
