There was more email about the RTL2832 chip today. I was wrong about the
poor utility of the baseband decode capability of the chip. In addition
to digitizing a 0-3MHz chunk of baseband spectrum, the chip can be told
to digitize any 3MHz chunk of "IF" spectrum between 0 and 30MHz.
There is already an experimental RTL-SDR driver that doesn't quit if the
E4000 tuner isn't present on the dongle. Give them a little longer and
the driver might allow setting the IF frequency. After that we have a
$20 HF SDR to play with. Due to the limited dynamic range it will
probable be a while until it works as good as a SoftRock. :-)
And it will need the front-end filtering that Jerry was talking about.
Perhaps the USB controlled HF filter intended for the SoftRock would be
useable.... Program support for it probably already exists....
