After much screaming and running in circles the AM-6154 2m amp finally came to life. I had taken possesion
of this amp 20 years ago in a partly converted state and it had sat in the corner since. I rediscovered it a couple of
weeks ago while doing some serious shack cleaning and decided to get it on the air. The conversion state turned out to be
chaotic but I got it straighted out with the exception of collapsing screen voltage as soon as HV was applied. Some
systematic diagnoses lead to a faulty gas discharge tube in the screen circuit, a new one is ordered, amp is running
well without it. I also ordered parts for a fully regulated grid supply but may not use that, the circuit I am cuirrently using
seems to work well.
I have been running it for about an hour now calling CQ on FSK441 at 300W, the air discharge is hot but not uncomfortably
so and the various readings are staying stable. There does not seem to be any hot spots on the outside of the chassis.
I know folks push this amp alot harder but I want it to hang together until the next project, a 3CX1500 is done.
See you on the rocks.
