The IF rig I've been using for microwave is a highly modified Realistic
HTX-100. I built a 2m transverter that just fits inside the space where the
speaker used to be and put it in the rig. I removed the rear heatsink and
associated parts and made a new rear panel with some BNC jacks and other
things on it.
A couple years ago I noticed it started cutting out. In one contest it
finally wouldn't work at all. I tracked the problem down to the LO circuit
not working. I swapped practically every part in the circuit. Wouldn't you
know it, it was almost the last part I checked - a cracked 1000 pF ceramic
chip cap used as a bypass on the emitter of the oscillator transistor.
At least it's done fine ever since.
