Thanks for the interesting read John.   One simpler solution is to run
CW ..... then when the rover gets closer switch to FM.  No fuss, no muss.

Seriously, I wonder how "bad" they sound on SSB without any attempt to make
them more linear - as is are they good enough for "roger, EN34" on SSB?
