Here's another alternative - sysrecuecd.  This has a couple different modes 
that may work, including one called ddrescue which will read damaged disks of 
all types and attempts to get as much as possible from the disk.

I used it many times, but never had to use the ddrescue portion of it.  Knowing 
how dd works, I can imagine it is probably quite effective.
