I reported a few days ago that my FT-857D that had been treated to a
super master reset had spikes on key and ptt closure (on FM or
whistling). Today I attacked the alignment menu (reached by holding A,
B, and C while turning on) and adjust the VHF power output steps and the
CW carrier level. Its possible with the VHF power output steps to limit
the transmit power to a few watts at what the front panel says is 50
watts and to set the minimum below 5 watts. Mine is showing about 2
watts on the low setting now on the scope. That will be nice for
transverter service.

The default setting after reset for CW carrier was apparently 255, all
it will do. Set at 148, it has NO SPIKE on CW, FM, or SSB while
whistling. My later 857D has that set at 144 and it has no spike.

It might also good for transverter use to set the VHF TXG(ain) lower so
it takes less agc to keep the power output down.

Now I'll see what the TXinhibit wire does.
