I worked this contest as a multi-op with Keith, KC0ZZQ from his family's
cabin near Battle Lake, MN.
Our plan was to put up some temporary antennas using steel tv antenna mast.
When we started lifting it, I realized we were going to bend the mast (having
bent a mast previously). We pulled one section, leaving 6m at about 20'.
The remaining mast went up in the air but the antenna mast wasn't straight.
We pulled the 2m beam off and got 6m in the air. 2m later was put up on a
ladder proped on the garage (this worked better than the steel mast).
The contest from EN26 wasn't any better than others have expressed. We
regularly heard K0SIX working others, but were unable to hear them. In the
evening, KA0RYT got on 2m with his legal-limit power, and I watched for
aurora over Ron's station in hopes it would get me some Qs :) We were
successful at tail-endeding Ron for (only) one QSO.
I didn't have the power & gain to work anything but the big stations in the
twin cities on either band; it didn't help that I left the power connector
for my 2M amp at home (power poles on the amp, some day).
We quit for the day around 10pm on Saturday. I noticed that we had worked a
bunch of out-state MN stations but nobody in the twin cities metro itself
(N0VZJ being the closest to the metro).
6m finally opened after we took down the 2m antenna, and were going to
start taking down 6m! For us the opening started towards Colorado, then
we started hearing New England stations and finally Texas.
