Joe, what IF drive level do you have the transverter set up to accept, and how do you control that level?from the 857D - with the 857D "Power" control in the setup menu ??? Most of these radios use active RF feedback control to reduce the power based on your "Power" control setting, so they can indeed produce a full output power spike right when you key down - I am not familiar with the 857D enough to know if its specifically true for it.? You may be able to mitigate this to some degree if you set up the transverter to take the maximum drive level (10 watts?), then set the Power control on the 857D to give you that 10 watts - then a fast spike at 40 watts may not damage the mixer ..... may not.?? This would be better than setting up the transverter for say 1 watt of drive and then hitting it with a 40 watt spike.
This is one reason why lots of the guys are?using 817's.? Also, the older 2m multimode rigs like the TR751 and TM255 have internal drive pots that seem to control the drive level itself rather than in a feedback mode, and thus don't seem to be as much of a problem.?? Its the new higher power, multiband, HF through 432 rigs that seem to have this characteristic.
PS:? Also a good idea to keep spare mixers in your parts box.
