The best easy-to-understand information I've ever seen on this topic is at:

Reading between the lines of that page and what you wrote, to me this says
that the radius for the capture area of your antennas are 28" and 12.5"
respectively. Adding these radii together, it would seem that 40.5" would
be a good stacking distance.
Then again, I *barely* squeaked through my EM fields class in college,
so I'm not the best of people to ask. :)
