Hello NLRS land. Here are a few odds & ends relating to our club.
1) NLRS is now incorporated in the State of Minnesota. Incorporation,
in addition to providing basic protection to the organization, is required
for item # 2.
2) Glen, Chris, and I will be working to obtain 501(c) 7 nonprofit
Federal tax status. Having NLRS becoming incorporated as discussed above
was one step. In addition to this, we need to include our bylaws and three
years of financial history with the necessary Federal forms. I hope to
have this completed in the next month or two. The need for obtaining tax
exempt status is essentially a requirement stemming from NLRS becoming an
established entity with cash flow and cash reserves. Please note that NLRS
will not be a 501(c)3 which allows those who make donations to our club to
take a tax deduction, but rather another form of a 501, namely a 501(c) 7.
Obtaining and maintaining 501(c) 3 status is more difficult, more costly,
and not in the scope of our club.
3) We are also working on establishing a club call with the goal of it
becoming W0AUS. Our first step is to obtain a club call from the FCC then
to work with Bob's family to cancel Bob's call, and then to update our
recently assigned club call to the vanity call of W0AUS. Again, this will
take a few months to complete. Through this action the club will be able
to activate "W0AUS" that will help us all maintain Bob's leadership and
vision.
4) Last, I want to mention that Microwave Update will be held here in
Bloomington, MN, on October 17 & 18. Microwave Update, sometimes referred
to as MUD, is smaller than Central States, say 70 to 90 attendee's rather
than 150 or more, and that focuses specifically on 900 MHz and up. I can
guarantee you that MUD will not be this close to NLRS land for some time to
come - perhaps years - so this is a rare opportunity for those who have an
interest in this part of our spectrum. Even if you have a parting
interest in uW, this is an opportunity not to be passed up. The
proceedings are packed with 32 articles ranging from light communications
to EME and the technical presentations will be equally diverse and
interesting. If your interest is just 6m, that's great and NLRS supports
that too, but we are a diverse group and this is a rare opportunity that I
hope club members with interests in the uW's attend. The website is
http://www.microwaveupdate.org/ and registration is very reasonable.
Ask questions if you have any.
