Hi!
We're going on a family vacation to South Dakota, and I did realize that we'll
be going through some grids that are somewhat rare. I'd hate to be there when
6 is open and not make some effort to put them on the air. Even if the band
is wide open, I will definitely NOT have a big signal, so please don't
rearrange your schedule too much to look for me. Also, we'll have a 4 year
old and a 2 year old in the backseat helping with logging. My rig is an
FT-817, so I'll just be running 5 watts. I checked, and my 40 meter hamstick
loads up with an acceptable SWR on 6 meters, so that's what I'll be using.
(Unless someone wants to lend me a 6 meter vertical with a 3/8" thread. But
frankly, I think the 40 meter antenna will work just as well or better, since
it's tuned to about 7.1 MHz, so it's 7/4 wavelength on 49.7 MHz.) When we're
camped, I'll probably be running a dipole, but most of the rare grids look
like they are where I'll be mobile.
If the band sounds dead, I'll occasionally put out a call on 50.125 or 50.095.
If the band sounds like it's open, I'll either work whoever I can hear, or
else call CQ on about 50.155, along with 50.095. I'll probably call CQ in CW,
but feel free to call me in SSB (above 50.1, of course), and we'll try to make
a 2-way in SSB. (I don't even know if crossmode contacts count for VUCC.) If
you can hear me, I can almost definitely hear you!
Also, I have antennas for 40, 30, or 20, so if you hear me on one of those
bands (probably CW), feel free to ask me to give 6 meters a try.
Here's our schedule. We'll almost definitely be in these grids on these days,
but I really have no clue as to the times we'll be in any particular grid.
QSL via my home address or LOTW (when uploading contacts to LOTW, please log
it as W0IS, not W0IS/M, W0IS/0, etc.) Also, my XYL is KC0OIA, so if you hear
her, she'll hopefully be in the same grid as I am. She goes along with this,
because she knows I'll let her drive while I'm operating.
73,
Rick W0IS
