Hi Thomas. Let me see if I can help you understand the rover rules .....
some one help ME if I get this wrong. In the past there was just one rover
operating class simply called "rover". Now there are three. The three
rover classes are rover, limited rover, and unlimited rover.
Here is a brief description of each.
Limited Rover: Operates with no more than four bands of their choice.
For example, 6m, 2m, 432, and 1296. They can also operate with less than
four bands. Their output power is limited to the same power levels as a
single-op low power stations. Those power limits are as follows: 6m and
2m = 200 watts PEP, 222 and 432 MHz = 100 watts PEP, 902 MHz and up is 10
watts PEP. You can not make more than 100 QSOs with another rover. You
participate under one call sign with one or two operators.
Rover: This is basically the same as it has been - the "standard" rover.
Operate with as many bands with whatever legal power you can. Again, you
can not make more than 100 QSOs with another rover. You participate under
one call sign with one or two operators.
Unlimited Rover: Same as Rover above, but the 100 QSO limit with another
rover is waived. That plus they may use more than two operators.
Based on your email Thomas it sounds like you would be a Limited Rover with
your low power (no bricks) rig for 6, 2, and 432. You can certainly take a
friend along to help with the driving & operating as a rover can be a one
or a two man team. I myself have often operated in your style where we
stop and set up temporary antennas - lots of fun. Just be careful with
those low rural power lines !!!
I can's help you with your question about VHF-DX as I don't use that
software package.
Regarding when to rove, my experience has been that the best contests are
the August UHF contest and the September VHF contest. The June contest
can be a lot of fun to, but its often very hot and I am not a fan of hot
weather. Of course the January contest is cold, it gets dark early, and
sometimes the snow cause problems with finding operating spots.
Hope this was helpful Thomos.
73, Jon

Re: New Rover Rules are here.)
Hi Guys,
I haven't roved in some time.... The contest rules seem to be
more confusing to me now.
If I rove..... I just used only 3 bands that I had 6, 2 & 432.
On 3 beams on 25 feet of masting. I just go drive to a 4 corners
grids... set up in one grid and work some stations barefoot no amps...
then I tear it down, laying the antennas on the truck drive over to
the next grid and set it up again and repeat this process. If I have
the energy to do it. I wanted to have a friend come along to help me
out, but now the rules don't seem to let you.
I'm not really sure anymore.... "Rover" should be for the guys
who drive and drive and drive around.... There should be another
type of rover where you go some where set up... operate for some time
then tear down... move to next grid set up again to operate. Like
maybe a "Semi-Rover" for a category.
Then as far as scoring..... is there a new version of VHF-DX? The
Last one I have is Ver. 4.1.56.
I lost interest in rovering by myself... in the cold.... and I
wish the other one was not so close to Field Day. Cause I put a lot
into F.D. and it's a lot of work for set up and tear down...
Well I wouldn't mind riding along with someone as a co-operator
in a rover... But I had no one asking me..... Hi Hi.
