[NLRS] Downtrodden, but not beaten!

Short of having a nearby beacon or a signal generator good to 10G, what 
are some of the pet ways to check and see if a transverter is 
receiving?  My borrowed unit was deathly quiet all weekend.  I do know 
it was transmitting (I have test equipment for that).  Since I have an 
HP 8640B generator up to 512 MHz, is it possible to put a diode inside 
something like a waveguide to coax transition and drive it with the 
8640B and generate useable harmonics up at 10G?
