There have been some questions about K0BSA's Ham radio class and testing
that they will be offering in January. K0BSA is BSA Venture Crew 373. Use
to be known as Explorers but BSA separated Explorers out as possible
profession training and everything else is now known as Ventures. K0BSA is
making a big push to increase its young adult numbers. The Venturing Crew
is open to all youth, male and female, between the ages of 14 and 21. Adults
are welcome to come aboard as advisors. This is also a way for scouts that
are 18 to extend their scouting experience as 18 is the end in a regular Boy
Scout Troop. This is the closest thing that we have to a youth lead,
driven, and oriented Ham radio club. I would like NLRS to consider a closer
relationship with K0BSA. There are many opportunities here especially in
the areas of roving, camping, 10Ghz contests, etc and ample opportunity to
effect a new generation.
The following is a write up that I sent to my home troop and all of you are
welcome to use it to send to your home troops if you are involved in Boy
Scouts, interested youth, or just as a complete information package along
with contact information. This class is open to all ages.
-----------------------------------------------------
My Dear Troop 289,
Here is an opportunity for our scouts to get three merit badges and their
Ham Radio license all in one. The three merit badges are Radio,
Electronics, and Electricity. There are only two merit badge counselors
that are approved for all three of these related badges and they will be
teaching these beginning in January. This is a chance to use the dead of
winter to accomplish a great goal and earn enough merit badges to push to
the next rank without having to wait until summer camp. Upon completion of
the course and passing the test the scout will earn the three merit badges
and be an FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Operator of the Technician Class.
Parents and Scouters can also take the class and upon passing the test will
also become an FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Operator of the Technician Class.
This is also a great opportunity for parents and their scouts to accomplish
the same goal and share in the assistance of learning and discovery. This is
a very attainable goal and will in the process de-mystify the worlds of
Radio, Electronics, and Electricity. This could be a good troop activity.
BSA Venture Crew 373 "K0BSA"(K, zero, B, S, A) is the group that will be
hosting the class at the Pavek Museum in St. Louis Pk. The Pavek Museum is
a marvelous electronics and communication Field Trip itself. The Technician
Class will start on Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at 7:00 PM for 10 consecutive
weeks. They charge $10 per family to offset faculty costs. There will also
be a book cost. Noted Professor and Scouter "Noel Petit" will be one of the
special teachers of the class.
Ham Radio has been instrumental in providing emergency communications for
every natural disaster. It is a great lifetime hobby of communications and
learning. To learn more about Venture Crew 373 and Ham radio, please Check
out the K0BSA Website at www.k0bsa.org
Both my daughter and son have taken this class. My daughter is an FCC
Licensed Amateur Radio Operator of the Technician Class "KC0OUK". As an
added advantage due to taking this class both my son and daughter greatly
exceeded their peers in these elements of their High School science classes.
