Jon,

there is a simple enough mod that can be done to the i/f switch from DEMI. 
Put a couple of inverse-parallel 1N914's across the output of the RX gain 
stage (after the coupling capacitor, of course) as a brute-force clamp. 
It won't last for ever if fed with 10W or more, but it should last long 
enough to allow everything to quiesce in the transmit state.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that newer variants of the switch do precisely 
that.
