The FT-817 has an input (TX INH on the Accessory jack) that will keep it from
putting out RF, even when PTT is keyed.

I've been looking at how I need to sequence things, and it seems to me that
most sequencers just delay PTT for the amplifier.

I think as part of the approach I will take, I will switch the IF T/R switch
as quickly as possible. On DEMI equipment with a high-power ("10W") drive,
the transmit goes in to a 50 ohm dummy load with a "tap" so I think it will be
safe. The downside is that if I sequence the transverter from RX to TX, there
will likely be some RF in to the transmit side before the TX circuit is
powered up. Today there is no guarantee that this doesn't happen, but it's
unlikely since the IF T/R switch and the TX/RX power are switched at the same
time.
