Everyone has said it already, but I'll repeat it, WHAT A BLAST. I started
the contest saturday on 6m like most everyone else. I 'searched and pounced'
the entire day without calling CQ once (which I'm learning is not the best
method for points). Occasionally I fliped up to 2m to check for the rovers
and anyone else. To my surprise I heard some grids that I shouldnt be
hearing. Being fairly new to the VHF SSB I was trying to figure out what was
wrong with the radio and double checking that it wasn't really on 6m. Oh
what the hell, hit the PTT and gave him a call and he came right back with
his grid report. WOW, what just happened. Tune a little more, there's
another strange call on 2m with the same results. I got 7qs, 4grids out of
that duct or whatever it was. My hands were shaking, just like that very
first contact I made on 10m after getting my novice ticket back in '90.
Sunday after tuning around 6m and only hearing stations I already worked, I
decided to try some CQ's. I ended up with a few new grids and more Q's
before 6 died out again. Looking at the graph of my QSO rate now, I realize,
like Justin said, if you aren't calling CQ you aren't winning. I'll have to
remember that for next time.

Thanks to my sponsor, Vince, for the radio loaner. Good luck getting it back
now ;)
