To all VHF'ers!
Interestingly enough, the July 1st Canada Day holiday marks the end of the
contest year for the Central States "Sates Above 50 Mhz" award. Fortunately
it also marks the beginning of next year's contest!
This is a reminder that logs this year do NOT go to long-time "States Above"
co-ordinator Bruce Richardson, W9FZ, who has his hands full with this year's
conference, but to me, Peter Shilton, VE3AX at the following address:

This contest is a great way to measure your activity and show us all how
lucky you have been in the past year with band openings. Simply tally your
STATES worked (not grids) on each band from July 1st, 2005, through June
30th, 2006, sum the number for each band, and that will be your total score.
You can find the entry forms on the Central States VHF Society's web site at
www.csvhfs.org You do NOT need QSL verification. Also, see other entry
news below!
Here's what Bill, K0AWU, a long time participant in the program had to say
about it;
"This is a lot of fun for me. It ends up allowing me to focus my operations
as well as to remain active."
In recent years the winners have posted scores nearing, but not breaking,
the 200 mark. Will this be the year?
In order to receive a plaque, the top three winners MUST submit their score
prior to the conference at the end of July, but handsome certificates will
be awarded to any particpant who reaches the 30 total states mark and
submits a score by August 31, 2006.
**** Electronic Logs****
This year I am pleased to report that John Kalenowsky, K9JK, has developed
an Excel-based form that will simplify submissions, and allow us to accept
e-mailed entries right up to the conference dates. John is still working on
a few improvements but it should be on the CSVHFS web site within a few
days. You may want to wait a few days and try out the new form.
Most electronic loggers will allow you to tally your "states worked" fairly
easily. In the past, I have used VQlog , which requires you to enter the
contact's state in a separate awards area, but doing that as much as
possible during the year makes keeping track of states needed, and preparing
the entry forms, easy. It also helps to make a practice of asking what
state an individual is located in, something we don't do that often any more
since grid squares became the usual exchange.
So get out your logs, tally up your scores, check out the Central States VHF
Society's web site for all the rules, and we'll see you in Minnesota for
this year's 40th anniversary conference!

Peter Shilton
