Five years or so ago, the US Naval Academy at Annapolis announced on a
Monday that Midshipmen would no longer be required to demonstrate
proficiency in Celestial Navigation (use of sextant, etc.) because of the
Navistar and other satellite (including GPS) navigation systems.
At approximately 0200Z on Tuesday (ie., the NEXT DAY) the Navistar system
went down, and STAYED down for ~36 hours!!!
You can put a LOT of ships onto a LOT of reefs in 36 hours.

Viking navigation worked quite well, it only involved one crewmember in the
crowsnest watching the shore, and saying "I can see it, I can see it, I
CAN'T SEE IT!!! I CAN'T SEE IT!! I can see it."
