I think you want to be careful with silicone...  because many formulations
contain acetic acid.  It's what gives it a vinegar smell when it is
curing.  This will corrode the braid, center conductor, connector and
other metalic stuff it comes in contact with over time.  You can find
non-acetic silicone which is often called "Aquarium Sealer" or gasket
sealer which is deemed "safe for O2 sensors".  These types don't have
the acetic acid and can be safe on metalics.

The kind I am thinking of is a thick black liquid.  It is in some kind
of VOC carrier and smells a lot like PVC pipe cement.  It has held up
well in the sun for me.

I put it on the outside of the tape though...  the tape goes on first,
then a coating of the liquid sealer... then perhaps another wrap of
tape and then sealer on that.  ScotchCoat is actually intended to go
on the outside of the tape... to seal the tape to itself.
