Is every one ready to Contest that's what this weekend was. Part
two. Friday morning I had every thing pack up and on the road around 11am.
I wanted to scout out some more sites to work from other then the two high
ones. Not lucky at all after one and half hours of driving up and down
grave roads. Off to town and meet up with Tony and Lenny for supper and
meet up later with Chris, Jon and Glen.
Saturday morning 5am its hard when the sun is not up at this time of
year. It was a nice morning till we climbed up the 2000 foot hill and yes it
was windy and we had to move are vehicles to block the wind the best we
could. The "Hitch A Dish" worked great it would have to roll the truck
first. Off in the east was lighting and a few rain showers most of the
morning there was no direct shots here it was all rain scatter and one had
to elevate the dishes up, it was fun to make some FM contacts in there, It
was about 1pm when we had to start pointing direct with the rover pack. For
that day the best DX was 358km to the guys back in the cites, Ah yes
cooking off the tail gate of the truck and making Q's and flipping dogs. But
no Q's with the Red River Guys conditions north was just not there even on
144.260, heard Barry in the noise. It was a good Idea to play south. Just
a side note the North shore temps for the day was 60 air, 60 water.
Well pack it up and have some supper and get to bed.
Sunday 5am again out of town we go like a convoy on a mission to
camp 2 and what did we find FOG just not any fog Thick Fog. It was so thick
at 150 feet away all we could see was dark shadows in the Gary haze and I
feel it add attenuation to are operation. We had to cover are gear every
thing you touch was very wet this is low voltage equipment right?. It was
about 1pm when it started to burn off. The rover group was in a heat wave
in the 80's 50's for us. Got to work the RRRV, Bill K0AWU filled in the
dry spells. Boy its time to pack up and head for home, time for some 10g
mobile work YES 10g mobile. Me and N0UK set up are units in side the vehicle
and QSO down the road back and fort with out stopping, it was a blast. Some
of you are wondering how it sounded, well lots of Doppler and scatter it
would have been better if we had FM on the I.F. radios Oh well. stop off
in Ortonville for a pit stop and setup to work KM0T on the way back. Talk
about moving down the road this rover pack was working Mike about every 15
mins on the way back to the cities. Just cant get us to "I SEE YOU". We had
13 stops with mike netting over 3300 points with him. Wrapped the day up at
Flying Cloud Airport working Mike one last time and found Bruce W9FZ still
up Had to work Bruce again!. Well it was 11pm when I pulled in and turned
every thing off.
Okay to wrap it up glad we did the South Central Minnesota
topologically made it easy to move in and out we conditions took a dive and
next year I say more south Like Iowa. Hi Mike how much room do you have.
For me my Summary sheet ended up with the following. Longest Q 358 Km,
Total Q's 352, Unic's 21, Total 77065 P.S. Be sure to write in at the
bottom of the Summary sheet "Northern Lights Radio Society". GREAT WORK TO
EVERY ONE FOR SETTING THIS UP. Now Central States is just around the
corner. 73's N0KP
