One thing that seems to be missing in the formula is lack of a reasonably
serious multiop station.

Good point Matt, I think we've talked about this on & off before, but never
with the focus that you bring. I can tell you that in years past I've
done some multi-op'ing ..... sometimes at someone's house, sometimes we do
a portable Field Day like set up. The nice thing about the UHF contest
is that the antennas are small (222 and up) thus making Field Day like
operations much more easy. Multi'ops are a great way for a group of guys
to pool their equipment and knowledge, and to share some fun for a 24 hr
contest.

I specifically remember two muli-ops using a Field Day like set up. The
first one was myself, K0TAR, and WB0GGM when we did a 222, 432, 1296
mulitop from some farmers field that was on a ridge in EN33 some years
back. The second multi-op I wasn't a part of, but it was N0HJZ, WA2HFI,
and K0PJ . I remember it because they operated from Buck Hill and we had
a tropo opening where they worked down through KY and GA on 1296 with 10
watts and a single looper yagi ..... they may still have the August UHF
MultiOp record for MN ...... pretty fun stuff.
