thanks Gary, Chris and Scott for the info.. sounds like the best  way to 
go is bnc on the cable and an adapter from bnc to sma on the the gps module

thanks again guys... nice to have so many knowledgeable people just a 
mouse click away...

I'm sure you will have a hard time finding a adapter. I have Male and 
Female connectors that fit Rg-174 your welcome to one if you decide to 
cut the one that's on there off.
I replace my wierd connector with a BNC as thats what my GPS uses. The 
shield on the 174 my break at the SMA after repeated use so maybe going 
to a crimp on BNC and then a adapter to SMA my be a better solution.

Looks like and MCX, that's what most of the GPS units use.  If you want 
to go to SMA your best bet is to replace it with one.  As for them being 
common, they are available but your local radio shack isn't bound to 
have them.
 
There is plenty of sources online for the connector, but you also have 
to get the crimping tool to install them also.
