I was down to the University of Colorado last week (Ft. Collins) and got a tour of the 'engine lab.' WOW! Kewel stuff! Like a 2 terawatt laser used in place of a spark plug to increase MPG by 50%! No kidding! 50% The laser only measured about 2" x 3" x 5". A 2 femtosecond, 2 terawatt pulse delivered by a new hollow fiber-optic!

One little item that caught my eye was a microwave scrubber for exhaust fumes. Near as I could see, it was a bunch of waveguides with exhaust fumes running through them. I asked the lab tech about how it worked but he didn't know the frequency(s). It breaks down all the hydrocarbons left over from the internal combustion processes--apparently returns them to their natural components like nitrogen, oxygen, carbon-dioxide, carbon, etc. What comes out the tail-pipe is non-toxic gases, carbon dust, etc. Pretty impressive stuff. Just wait until every new car has one of those babies attached. I hope it's nowhere near a ham band...
