[NLRS] E-opening?

Must have been a big sporadic-E opening.  I worked NY at 0200 (8pm local) on 28.4 MHz SSB in the 10 meter contest.  Made lots of contacts into VA, MD, GA also on 10 meters CW/SSB between 2130 and 2230.  I know that 10 meters isn't technically VHF, but there usually isn't any propogation to the East coast in this time of no sunspots.
