Hi Everyone. Boy now I know what the people had to deal with when
Ivan came to shore. This week end the winds out there just never stop
blowing, 20 to 30 all day Saturday and Sunday over 40. It just took every
thing out of you to Hang on to that dish. I will explain, having 50 pounds
strap on the dish, with one foot on leg of the tripod, one hand on the neck
of the dish, The other hand on the dish to keep it from oscillating, the
other hand tuning the VFO, another hand holding the log, the other hand on
the Key. Oh wait one I only have two hands. People where stopping by
asking if we found the rabbit yet. Oh ya people parking their cars in front
of your dish and leaving them there while they hop into another car and take
off. At one time we heard Bruce "W9FZ" say Holly Cow and Glen goes what's
that and Bruce responded that's Barry's house. He had a hard time keeping
the dish in one spot. At times the wind would get under the head phones and
you would say what did he say. Conditions for us was not great and you will
hear some say it was not that bad. Well you needed to be out there, up 1950
feet up.
Okay that's out of the way Saturday Started out by hearing W9FZ on
146.46 and K0KFC. After setting up in another location the fog rolled in. It
was neat to see that up at 2000 feet. The wind at this time was way down.
Are first Q on two meters was great just like in are back yard. Not so
great on Sunday. Anyway 10 G's was okay lots of SSB contacts. 46 the
First day. Packed up around 8pm and grab some food. Sunday, That day was
all ready windy, 20 to 30. Got set up around 9am. This day was not good at
all. Lots of CW contacts and I will say one needs to be on there toes
knowing mores code, and I mean this, Lots of power was needed, like 2
watts not 200 Milli watts, as I said above the winds took out the good
conditions the propagation was gone, No humidity in the air, and with only
16 Q's for the day. We packed it in around 4pm. Had it for the day time to
go home. I am still working on the log and I will send out a update.
Cheers Dave N0KP
