Sunday nite seemed to a great time here on 10Ghz – Clare and I had 8 qso’s all
on SSB. At the start I was in EN44da Clare went to EN44, 43, 33, and 34. He
was fairly close in EN44 but had to dip behind a hill to get to 43. Both of us
had an AG building in view to the south with a long metal roof which worked
really well for scatter – S9 + sigs both ways. The site that Clare found in
EN33xw was really good too – distance shows only 18 miles away although it is
much further than that to drive. After we completed with Clare in EN34xa just
NW of St Charles I headed for EN33 with the 200mW setup. Clare headed back to
EN44da where I started. I arrived at EN33xa just before 9:00PM and setup a bit
east of where Clare was earlier. As soon as Clare began to transmit I found
him. Signals were incredibly strong from this location S9 + both ways! We
completed the next 3 qso’s finishing up in EN44. Many thanks to Clare for the
effort – my grid count on 10G is at 5 now and Clare has 4. Thanks as well to
KM0T for a good chunk of the hardware!
It was quite a learning experience for me. Finding horizon in the dark can be
quite a challenge – hopefully we can share some info with the group on the
locations. Drift was almost non–existent as we had both transverters powered
up the entire time. My FT290RII worked well for the IF rig, and the PTT
interface I built seemed to key the DB6NT xverter nicely. The EN33xa spot that
I was in would work well for all bands – just enough room to park off the
county road with good views of the horizon in most directions. I will have to
take the rover there sometime and see how good the path is to EN34 and 44 on
the rest of the bands. Looking forward to tomorrow nite – plenty of room for
scheds – 3.4, 5.7, and 10.
73,
Matt
