Yes, the August UHF contest is still a little ways off (Aug 7 & 8), but the
planning has started. Remember that the UHF contest is 222 and up and that
its just 24 hrs (1800Z to 1800Z). The goal for Rover Mania is to generate
activity, especially via roving. The more rovers out and about the more fixed
stations we can entice to be active.
>From preliminary discussions with that perennial rover powerhouse N0DQS/R,
Gene is most likely going to do his usually route to cover EN12, 13, 14, 21, 22,
23, 24, 31, 32, 33, and 34. He will have "all" bands.
For W0ZQ/R, I am still working on bands & equipment. Through the years my
station has become less roverable. As of today I can get 222, 432, 2304 and
10 GHz easily roverable. I will most likely be adding 3456 and I am looking
to see how I can add 1296 and perhaps 902. Pretty certain no 5760.
Regarding route, my initial thoughts are to go to the EN14/15/24/25 corner
and come east to EN24/25/34/35, overnight at home, then go to either the
EN22/23/32/33 or EN32/33/42/43 grid corner. Remember its just a 24 hrs, not 48 hrs
like the big VHF contests. A secondary plan that I am looking at is to do
the nine grids around the Twin Cites by heading to each of the four grind
corners.
What about others ? I know that KM0T, W0GHZ, and K0AWU have indicated that
they will be on as fixed stations and K0MHC was thinking about roving or
fixed. Rover Mania will be a great chance for you to try a bit of roving even if
you only have one or two bands .... throw it in the car and head to a grid
corner Sat. afternoon or Sunday evening. It sure would be fun to have QRM on
1296.100.
Rich, N0HJZ, offered to collect & coordinate rover routes as best possible so
if you have some thoughts about what you may be doing and going, get them on
the reflector for Rich to capture. Obviously all planning is preliminary and
we are not going to hold peoples hands to the fire, but we are trying to
coordinate Rover Mania just a bit so that three rovers don't show up in the same
corn field at the same time.
PS: Rover to rover QSOs that are within the spirit of the contest are highly
encouraged.
73, Jon
