Hello All
A cold front moved through MN on a north- south line, passing through
Grand Rapids about 12:10pm this afternoon. I posted a message on the
10Ghz reflector and got ready for a run looking south.
I started beaconing at 12:20 and heard Bob W0AUS's beacon on the
same freq that I heard the unidentified sig yesterday. Bob was not real
strong and I answered with a CW QRZ ... Bob didn't have his key and went
to the house to get it. Gary W0GHZ called in and I worked him with S2-S5
signals on SSB. The path was very much in flux.
Unknown to me at the time, Bob had problems when we went to try CW,
the IF rig was keyed all the time ... ARGH. Bob tried FM also unknown to
me at the time. I didn't detect that an FM sig was there, staying in CW
mode and calling CQ and/or beaconing. After working Gary, I was also
staying up freq about 1.2kc from where Bob was heard ... I did tune a lot
however.
Bob heard me as strong as S6 and heard me in two different headings.
The second heading about 20deg east of the first.
This was an intense front, but almost PARALLEL to the path ... I think too
much of a good thing. I'm guessing TOO MUCH scattering as I beaconed
on the back of the front. I heard no-one and as far as I know no-one heard
me after about 12:30. I had to stop several times to get out of local showers
and Bob was chased out of the yard by a downpour that lasted as I
understand about 30min.
Oh well ... a lot to learn
