Hi Donn, Scott, and NLRS land. The roar that we heard on 10GHz FM on
Sunday afternoon was just like you were standing next to a good size water
fall .... if you closed your eyes you could not have told the difference.
The amplitude (volume if you will) was close to that of the voice that was
being received at the same time .... ie; impossible not to notice !
Sideband was unusable due to the Doppler. CW was used for some beaconing
to peak dishes and the Doppler smear was several KHz, much like a very very
strong aurora, perhaps more like 222 than 2m with an increased smear.
Regarding the storm itself, the reporting was VERY confusing at times with
reported shelf clouds and wall clouds. They had "tornados" and most of
the radar circulation associated with the front end of the thunderstorms
and its shelf cloud .... only one station was (what I think) properly
reporting them as "gustnatos" .... a swirling wind event due to the strong
inflow that we were all seeing associated with the front end of the storm
and its shelf cloud formation. I'm not sure how many wall clouds were
seen and if they had rotation. At least thats my layman's perspective.
Did I get it right ?
Regarding 10 GHz today, yes, yes, and yes. The NWS has a large area of
slight risk from the Texas panhandle up to VE4 land that covers the Twin
Cities and points west. Both Barry and Mike (KM0T) are aware of todays
chances and will be monitoring. I think Mike isnt home until after 6:00
PMish or so. If the wx does cooperate I do plan to go to Cannon Falls to
attempt to work VE4MA and anyone else that I can hear .... right how it
looks like any storm development may be a bit more southward and later in
the day .... we will have to montior the afternoon development. I would
say the chance for KM0T to VE4MA looks promising right now as any supercell
that pops up should most likely be somewhere in eastern SD and will
propagate this way. The freezing line is low so the outlook for hail is
high.
