Greetings from the wet country (Seattle). My latest project has been to
create a map in TopoUSA showing fixed locations, portable locations and
commonly used rover sites in the Pacific Northwest for the June contest. It
is posted at:

I printed off one of the compass roses that K7LOG created (available on my
website - see "Compass Roses for Download") and had Kinkos print it onto an
overhead transparency. I taped it onto my map, centered on my portable
location.

At this point I really went nuts and cut some 1/8" plexiglass into a strip 2
inches wide by 20 inches long. I marked a line down the center with a
sharpie pen and drilled a hole at one end on the line. Using a ruler and
the map scale I marked of distances in 15 mile increments on the plexiglass.
A small bolt affixes the strip to the map at my portable location, so I can
now put the line on the plexiglass strip over another location and get a
bearing and approximate distance. A photo is at:

If the writing looks a little strange on the strip it is because I wrote it
backwards so the ink markings are on the inside.
