I'm like Chuck .... I still paper log all daily stuff (including HFing), but
use computer logging for contesting. I've used NA for years because it
provides the same look & feel for all my contesting that I dabble with (ie; DX
contest, SS, 160m, 10m, UHF and VHF contests). I handle rovers by entering them
as portable in their grid, for example W0ZQ/EN33, then W0ZQ/EN34, etc.
Computer logging does all the dup checking, automatically computes your score,
shows you at a glance what grids (multipliers) you may be missing, and at one
minute past the end of the contest you simply email your results in.
I usually fight with the contest robot as my version of NA is a bit older and
the contest category (SINGLE OP HIGH POWER) is wrong, so I then use a text
editor on the file to adjust what the robot rejects and the second time around
the submission is usually accepted. As for computer noise, I use an older
laptop that is slower, a Toshiba, that does not seem to generate any noise that I
can detect .... some machines are better than others in this respect.
Yea, its unfortunate that the League requires electronic submissions for most
major contests these days. On the other hand the number of logs received is
tremendous and electronic files allow for them to do a better job in terms of
managing the results and the report .... can you imagine being responsible
for running and reporting on a major contest like the January VHF contest ; can
you imagine all those paper logs being sent to you and you then need to do
some level of cross-checking then organize them, score them, and report ? I say
thank goodness for computer logging although I will admit that there is an
endless discussion around the merit of the Cabrillo format itself.
