I've also been a proponent of an FM only category, and I think I wrote that in
a reply to the recent survey. I think Bruce stumbled into a rule that tips
it's hand towards the ARRL's vision for the future of ham radio. That
universe of operators Bruce speaks of is today's horde of Technicians [like
me] who've bought dual-band *FM* mobile radios and we want to lure them into
contesting.
Well, why did we choose an FM dual band radios? Because most sideband radios
are "HF" rigs (with VHF & UHF) and the dual bander is cheaper -- why pay for
bands you can't use? With the New Ham having HF access, rigs like the ic706*
and ft100* will be more prominent as an "entry level" rig than they are today.
