In addition to everything Jon P said ALL computer items are notorious for
generating white noise and what might sound like birdies in you 6m signal.
The biggest culprits are SOHO routers, hubs, switches, any 802.11x
wireless(not the RF but the routing circuitry inside) especially the plastic
cased units. Now theoretically there is a conductive paint sprayed on the
inside of these plastic cases to act as a shield but any bouncing around can
cause that integrity to break down as that shield is dependent on all the
inside touching parts to be conductive to each other.

Add to this all the new products with computers that barely pass the part 15
subpart j RF interference standards and you now have quite a number of
products to eliminate. After you throw your mains you may find the noise
coming from the 15 foot unshielded interconnect cable connecting your
neighbor's flat panel HDTV to its tuner.

An FT-817 with a 440mhz DFing loop in AM mode with an antennuator at 6m
works really well to help pinpoint source of noise.
