Hi Donn. My GPS also indicated EN47ur, which is what I recorded last year
as well. I did not write down the lat/lon or hit the way point button,
but a quick look at topozone.com, based on where I know I was standing,
puts us at 47d 44' 50" N, 90d 19' 59" W, which is indeed EN47ur.
Yep, we had fun and will be back next year .... it can't get any colder
........ right ? Besides, I still think that The Lake commonly offers
UHF & microwave enhancement during the late summer months, a theory that I
would like to continue to explore. We saw that in spades last year and
we had a whiff of it Sat afternoon & evening this year.
This year, when conditions were good at 10 gigs , we worked with BIG
signals (based on an N=1) on 1296. Last year, with the really good
conditions (but no 1296 along for the test), we worked each other with
marginal signals on 2m FM (50 watts & whips). Based on this limited
information (weak 2m FM signals, very strong 1296, strong 10gigs) I think
that the enhancement layer, when it exists, may be more than 150 feet
thick, and perhaps more like 200 to 400 feet when its strong, which is much
thicker than a classic evaporation duct (based on what I have read).
Although evaporation may be a contributor to any enhancement, its not in
the same sense as a classic warm water evaporation duct where there is very
strong refraction but only in the first tens of feet right above the water.
All speculation on my part.
Next year my plans are to have 2m SSB, perhaps 432, 1296 and 10gigs.
Hopefully someone on the other side will have similar bands. That should
give us a good set of test frequencies to probe any enhancement.
73, Jon
