I was on Mt. Greylock during the UHF contest last year, so running
around MN and IA was change of pace! It is really great to see how
this contest comes together with all of the activity. KM0T was kind
enough to give this rover a doghouse and essentially help me build my
rovermobile from scratch on a borrowed car. We built antennas for 432
and 10GHz on Friday as well as the rover rack out of 30ft of PVC pipe
(actually 29' 6-1/4"--it was close!). Thanks to N0KP for providing a
dish on such short notice! I wish I had had more time to operate, but
this was largely a trip to a wedding thinly disguised as a rove....or
was it the other way around?
Highlights (?):
1) Pre-contest breakfast provided by KM0T. Did you remember to feed
Rover?
2) working 3456 over a 120mi path *while moving*. HWY 60 West points
right at KM0T for much of the journey. We sound like Donald Duck on
that frequency at 60MPH.....
3) Hearing W0GHZ on rainscatter from the base of Mike's tower....S4 @
50ft = S1 at 4ft . I think prop will be better after the corn
harvest......
4) Giving a tour of the rover at the wedding reception at Carleton
College on Saturday evening. I was great to see all the old friends,
tell stories, see how they've changed, find out who's doing well and
who's finally gone off the deep end....
5)Getting pulled over...twice! Can anyone beat this? I guess rocking a
truck back and forth on an overgrown farm access driveway at 2:37am
looked a little nefarious. I'm sure Mike's 24 GHz station in
breadboard form could easily have been mistaken for the Doomsday
device. Good thing I still had my tie on!
I don't know what my score was, but I'll add it up later and send in my
log. I don't really care what it is, unless of course, there is a
gold-plated plaque for weirdest looking line score. Dad's truck is
1000mi older now.
