Jim,
I have some laser info on my website that you may want to check out.
HeNe's are notoriously difficult to modulate--you are usually limited
to failrly slow CW by keying the beam on and off through a chopper
(fan). If you use a laser pen you can just wire it up to a TTL
oscillator--you'll probably find that the beam has a bit more
divergance, which can be an aid in aiming over shorter distances...not
to mention that it's much lighter and doesn't need HV. I have a pair of
the ramsey kits also, and they are lots of fun--I'm sure they are good
for a tens of miles with good lenses, provided you can point them.
The RX that I put together per K3PGP's directions is extremely sensitive
under dark conditions (I haven't had a chance to try the daylight
version yet). It doesn't really even need a lens until the path is over
a couple miles--those lasers are *bright*. I can just hear myself cloud
reflections using a 3mw pointer and a 4" lens--I have some fresnels, but
I need to figure out how I'm going to mount them.
We're looking to try out some laser stuff here in the Rochester/NY area
this second weekend also.
