It looks like I should be able to get out that weekend if there are
loaner rigs available.

Yeah, looks like there's a lot of that going around :)

I'm guessing that only WBFM would be available to me on loan, so I will
mainly be out to give folks a unique callsign over a short distance.
But I would like to go out with someone who will be hitting many spots,
so I can see them for myself and check their exact coordinates with my
own GPS.

As I recall, you had one of the better WBFM rigs going, but I don't know
how far it will really go. I think my longest QSO was 23.6 Km if I
recall correcrly. Maybe we can make it go a bit further this time
(should be possible to go quite a bit further).

Well, do you have two lasers (for a 2-way)? A kilometer of flat space
should be easy to find somewhere -- maybe a 0.6 mile stretch of
straight, flat rural road almost anywhere? Just a thought...

 > Anyone know the exact distance from Mounds Park to the Capital overlook?

My Palm Pilot calculates the actual distance as 3.7 Km or 2.3 Mi. The
grid-center to grid-center distance is 6.6 Km. The distance from Mounds
Park to Cherokee Park is similar: 3.7 Km, 24 Mi.

> Again, some optimism here but fun to try...still haven't found any sort of fresnel lens to improve the possibility....

Check out http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bclee/lens.html -- If you read
the paragraph entititled "The Random Destructive Acts FAQ", there is
some mention of sources for fresnel lenses.

Hope that helps!
