A more recent email from Alan included the following:
------------------------
Donations have been coming in and we are in good shape for the future. I
don't think we have enough to last a full year but it will be close. I
appreciate all your effort and help with this.
<snip>
We need about 19K a year to pay all the bills and have a reserve if we need
a new server or some other breakdown. 12K of that money comes from me and
the rest by donations. So I need a way to guarantee income of about 7K a
year for the system. We are non-profit so I have to be careful not to take
in more than we need.
----------------------------
NLRS is for sure a member in good standing at QTH.net. The money that NLRS
donates annually is several times more than the minimum amount requested by
Alan. There is no question at all that NLRS has more than met the
requirements of the situation. We are not freeloading.
There is no need for NLRS to make another donation, we have already done
more than the minimum required. But that does not mean that individual
members or the club couldn't make an additional donation if they feel like
it.
And there is no chance the NLRS is going to pay all Alan's bills for him.
He says in this last email that annual expenses for the system are $19,000
and he pays the first $12,000 out of his own pocket. I know I don't have
that kind of loose change lying around.....
I think we can safely put this question to bed. The immediate need is gone.
We can bring the subject up again at the annual meeting. In the mean time,
any NLRS members who would like to make a donation to QTH.net can do so. It
will be appreciated.
Personally, I am volunteer list admin for four remailers on QTH.net. Three
of them have a total of about 500 members and average two messages a month.
The other has around 200 members and averages over 500 messages a month. I
don't know if any of them make donations.
